The series
“The Forge of Destiny” draws much inspiration from Jungian psychology and from
the concept of the Shadow, especially. The shadow, as defined by the Swiss
psychologist Carl Jung, is the totality of characteristics of one’s personality
that go unobserved by the indivdual, much like how one does not pay much
attention to their physical shadow.
The shadow
does not need to be necessarily negative but it is always chaotic since it is
not subjected to the control of consciousness. However, it is the shadow’s
desire to be consciously integrated and it is for this reason that it will
influence the individual’s life until proper integration occurs. Integration,
as the word is used here, does not mean conscious exercising of the aspects of
the shadow but mere recognition of them as part of the personality. Once they
have been recognized, the individual can choose to handle the shadow aspects
however they desire.
Dr. Jung’s
psychology and the MBTI types that his psychology has led to were used in
different ways in “Battle for the Heart of Verdure.” The shadow functions as
defined by Dr. John Beebe have been used to some extent, as well as the “four
sides of the mind” theory that has been made popular by YouTuber CSJoseph.
Concretely, for example, the character of Lich Coldheart would represent and
ISFJ Superego (once again, ‘superego’ here is used as defined by CSJoseph and
is not related to the notion of ‘superego’ defined by Sigmund Freud), Doom
largely embodies the disrupting qualities of a 5th slot extraverted intuition
(Ne) and Lorelei Div is an ENFJ that is largely under the influence of her 8th
slot extraverted thinking (Te). Various other types have been used, with
Calldwr Kane and Albert Columbus Bern both being INTJ, Enya Firebrand being
ESFP, Dianne Fleur being ESFJ, Lailoken Augustine being ISTJ, Aileen Damerae
being INFJ, Fia Ignacia being ESTJ and Sapphira Stellaswon being ENTJ. The
concept of ‘anima’ will also play a significant part in the story but just
exactly how will not be revealed at this moment since it will spoil significant
events that will occur in future installments.
The enneagram
psychology is also used, although to a lesser extent. In that regard, Calldwr
Kane and Albert Columbus Bern would be 3w4, Lorelei Div would be a 7w6 in her
sane state but 8w7 when corrupted by Nether, Dianne Fleur a 2w1, Enya Firebrand
a 7w6, Lich Coldheart a 3w2 and Doom a 5w4.
There is much
to say about the psychology that has been weaved into the story of “Battle of
the Heart of Verdure” and is yet to be weaved into the rest of TFoD. This is
all I will say for now, however. For more details, please try reading the book.
It might turn out to be quite an interesting experience.
